Reflection
For my semester in Project Management, I decided to focus on helping animals in shelters. I have had many experiences with animals such as owning them, fostering, as well as working at a dog and cat boarding and daycare facility. The reason I chose this topic is because of my background knowledge and love for animals. I wanted to be able to help them get adopted and find their forever homes. I do know a lot about animals and the systems they are in, but I wanted to know more about the business side and promotional side to animal adoptions. My question for this project was how can I help puppies in shelters get adopted to forever homes. I ended up creating a starting kit for new puppy owners who adopt. It had everything they need to get started with their new furry friend. For the Paks 4 Pups project, I decided to reach out to the Colorado Puppy Rescue. I chose to specifically connect with the Colorado Puppy Rescue because they did not have anything like this yet and people who are adopting puppies are more likely in need of supplies. I believe that in order for the puppy and the families to have the best start possible, they should be given the supplies to do so. By doing this, it is more likely that the adoption will work out. My project objective was to communicate with my community members and local stores to get donations and volunteers so that I can plan, organize, and set up puppy starter kits. I wanted this to be non-profit which is why part of my focus was looking for donations and volunteers. The overall goal was to increase the success rate of adoptions through Colorado Puppy Rescue. In the end, I raised over $170 to buy toys, treats, a dog tag, and a starting amount of food to create starter packs for the Colorado Puppy Rescue. I then went to their adoption event on Saturday, October 26th, 2019 and gave the bags to the Colorado Puppy Rescue. I created 10 starter kits so that the first ten people to adopt would receive the bag. This project took a lot of communication skills as well as organization and time management. I enjoyed helping a cause even though I had to work through a couple of risk factors while working with the Colorado Puppy Rescue. I was able to get everything ordered, made and completed on time for the event on the 26th. During this project I learned how to do the following: I wrote a professional letter of intent and put it into my project proposal. I organized and professionally set up my project proposal to share my ideas with others who might be interested. I wrote a professional email and contacted the Colorado Puppy Rescue. I organized and had professional conversations to share my ideas with others who might be interested. I created an easy and reliable way for people to do donate to my cause. I created a professional logo for Paks 4 Pups. I managed my time to equal out the amount of work I was doing each day. I created a flyer that would effectively attract customers for the Colorado Puppy Rescue. I planned a budget spreadsheet that was organized and efficient. I reached out to my community members to make what I’m trying to do well known by more people. In the future I will be able to use these skills I learned in my job as well as future projects. I will also be able to use what I learned to help teach others.
